This town jealously keeps its major treasures in its beautiful palaces. To discover them we have to follow a cultural itinerary through the museums where 14th to 18th century Sienese art is preserved. It is possible to create an itinerary with visits to one or several museums.

 

- Around the building of the Cathedral

This walk includes the Cathedral with the Piccolomini Library, the Crypt with its 13th century frescoes, and the very beautiful Baptistery, dating back to the 15th century, where Iacopo della Quercia, Donatello and Ghiberti worked together. At the Museum of the Opera the precious glass window by Duccio with his superb Maesta painted in 1311 are to be found.

- From the ancient heart of Siena to its Commune pride

This itinerary includes a visit to the oldest western hospital, Saint Mary of the Ladder that was formerly a shelter for thousands of pilgrims. Nowadays its evocative vaults host the local Archaeological Museum. The most famous frescoes of the European Middle-Ages and the civic virtues of the 14th century are to be seen at the Civic Museum. This walk comprises the treasures of the National Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca Nazionale).
