VILLAS, CASTLES AND GARDENS Two days
Since ever the Sienese noble families loved to reside in wonderful country houses or imposing castles and beautiful villas which gardens and landscapes mingled together. The setting for hamlets and patrician residences were the very well cultivated lands and rolling hills from where the town was visible, even if in the distance. In the XVIth century, often on what remained of ancient fortalices, the romantic dream of creating magnificent villas rose. The idea of elegant parks, cypress tree paths, rose beds, little Renaissance chapels ,allegorical statues, lemon-houses or water- lilies was nourished by the poetic scenery. Formal Italian gardens gently tamed the harsh nature of the Sienese land. The present owners of these places, after a careful restoration, open their gates to show us these remarkable gardens.
