The Crypt
Since ever believed to have been the atrium of the east access to the Cathedral, the discovery of this frescoed space under the floor of the church itself is recent and sensational. In 1317 this area was incorporated into the apse of the new Baptistery to lose trace of it for seven hundred years .Its extraordinary and rare cycle of late 13th century frescoes, based on the Old and New Testament , is among the most important and best preserved in Europe.
